Griffin Flea Facts

It may seem like we’ve gone down this road before, but fleas are a year round insect in Griffin, as it warms up the eggs that have been lying dormant in grass, leaves, upholstery, even carpet and bedding, are being sprung.

The eggs may have had no impact on you and your pet over the winter months, but the female flea may have produced more than 2,000 eggs before you were able to eradicate her from your pet. The eggs then produce larvae, which cocoon until new fleas erupt.

Full grown fleas have six legs and their hind legs are made of a protein called resilin. This turns their rear legs into a high tension spring that allows them to jump, flying end over end, up to two feet. That’s a pretty amazing feat for an insect that is only around 1/10 of an inch long!

Fleas lay their eggs as they feed, so they are looking for blood. When they are on grass, weeds, in carpet or sofa cushions, the eggs and larvae are singular. The minute they start getting food, they begin to procreate.

A common misconception is that they lay their eggs in your carpets and couch cushions. The eggs roll off of their host. They need the host in order to produce the eggs.

Fleas can “sense” a host is nearby. Vibrations, air currents, and heat are all giveaways for them. Once they sense their meal is ready, they spring into action.

They are also aware of light and shadows. They turn towards light so that they can gauge from the shadows that a host may be near.

Fleas can carry a multitude of diseases. Many can be transmitted from animals to humans. Tapeworms, typhus, and haemofelis can all be transmitted from your pet to you and your family. Even Cat Scratch Fever!
